Getting started with the client

The PARIDE client is the window you use to read and write the code that lives on the server. This guide takes you from the first start to the first open file.

1. Start PARIDE

The client is a folder to unpack, for Windows, Linux or macOS: inside there is the PARIDE program, started with a double click. It installs nothing in the system; its settings live in the user's data folder (%APPDATA%\PARIDE on Windows, ~/.config/PARIDE on Linux).

The window opens full screen, with the dark theme. At the top there are the menus (File, Edit, View, Build, Debug) and the everyday command bar; on the left the file tree and the projects panel; at the bottom the Output, where PARIDE writes what happens.

2. Connect to the server

On the first start, without a server, the Configuration opens by itself, in the Connection section. Fill in:

  • Server: the name or address of the machine where paride-server runs;
  • Port: the one your administrator gives you (if they did not change it, the field already has the right one);
  • Workstation name: how you want to be called on the server, for example roberto-laptop. Letters, digits, dot, dash and underscore.

and press Connect.

3. Get approved

The first time the server does not know you. The client creates the key of your workstation by itself, kept by the operating system, and introduces itself: the bar at the bottom shows “Waiting for approval” with a 6-digit code, and the Output writes the command the administrator has to give.

Tell the code to the administrator (in person, on the phone, in a chat). They compare it with the one on the server and approve you with a role: observer, developer or administrator. As soon as they do, the client gets in by itself, without restarting anything. How it works on the administrator's side is in the guide Users and roles.

Comparing the code makes sure the server has the key of your workstation and not someone else's.

4. Open a file

The tree shows the server's workspaces, that is the project folders. Open the folders and double-click a file: it opens in an editor tab. If you know the name, Ctrl+P (quick open) is faster: type a few letters and pick from the list.

From here on the guides Workspaces and files and Writing together explain the rest.

The next times

PARIDE remembers server, port and name, and reconnects by itself to the last server on start. When you are connected, at the bottom left there is just a green dot; orange or red, with some text next to it, means there is something to do, and a click on the status opens the Configuration.

If the server changes key

The client remembers the server's key the first time. If one day it changes, the client stops and says so in the Output: someone might be in the middle. If instead the server was really reinstalled, ask the administrator for the server's short code, check it matches, then press Forget server in the Connection section: the client introduces itself again and has to be approved again.
