Workspaces and files

A workspace is a folder on the server holding a project, or several projects that go together. All the connected clients see the same workspaces, with the same files.

Opening a new workspace

Workspaces are added by the administrator, from the client or on the server.

  • From the client: Configuration → Server, “Add a workspace”, with the name and the folder on the server.
  • On the server: sudo -u parideserver paride-server workspace add NAME /srv/paride/NAME.

The folder must exist and belong to the service user (parideserver). The workspace appears at once in the tree of every connected client, without restarting. Removing a workspace does not delete its files.

The file tree

The tree updates by itself: a file created from a terminal, by git or by a build appears in a moment. Files excluded by .gitignore are hidden; the “Excluded files” switch in the bottom bar shows them dimmed. Names are coloured by type: folders gold, C# light blue, C and C++ copper, project files green.

With the right mouse button on a file or a folder:

  • New file, New folder, Rename or move, Duplicate;
  • Move to trash: nothing is really deleted. The trash lives in the workspace, and from there everything goes back to its place; after 30 days items leave by themselves. The only permanent deletion is “Empty the trash”, which asks for confirmation;
  • Download…: brings a file or a folder to your computer.

To upload, drag files and folders from your computer onto the tree: they go into the folder under the pointer, and the progress shows in the bottom bar. A file that was already there goes to the trash.

Quick open

Ctrl+P opens the search by name: type a few letters of the name in the order they appear, and the best files come first. For example “mainwin” finds src/Windows/MainWindow.cs. It works even on projects with tens of thousands of files.

The Projects panel

Next to the tree, the Projects panel shows the workspace as a build sees it: the .sln and .slnx solutions, their folders and projects, and inside every project the files to build. The labels (workspace, solution, folder, project) can be switched off in the Configuration, Appearance section.

PARIDE recognises the projects by itself. If you want to tell it yourself, the tree menu has “Create paride.json”: it writes the proposal with the projects found at the root of the workspace and opens it in the editor, so you can correct it and keep it in git.

Images, PDFs and Markdown

  • An image (PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, WebP, ICO) or a PDF opens in a read-only tab.
  • On a Markdown file the eye in the tab header, or Ctrl+Shift+V, opens the preview on the right, which updates while you write. Links to other files of the workspace open in PARIDE.
  • File → Export to PDF… on a Markdown file makes the PDF and saves it on your computer.
